Built for cycles, not for digging
A material-handling front is optimised for reach and cycle speed rather than breakout force. The geometry differs from an excavation front: it holds the tool at a workable height through the cycle instead of maximising force at ground level, because a handling machine picks material up and moves it rather than cutting into anything.
Duty cycle is the real specification
Handling machines run far more cycles per hour than excavators, continuously, for entire shifts. That shifts what matters. Hydraulic cooling capacity, pump sizing and slew system durability become the limiting factors, while peak digging force — the headline figure on an excavator spec sheet — becomes close to irrelevant.
Specification points
- Cab elevation. Most handling work requires seeing into containers, bays, barges or trailers. A raised or hydraulically elevating cab is normally specified with the front rather than added later.
- Continuous rotation circuit. Grab and grapple work needs continuous rotation, correctly sized. Confirming that auxiliary hydraulics merely exist is not the same as confirming the rotator circuit is right.
- Wheeled or tracked. Wheeled carriers suit hardstanding and yards where the machine repositions constantly; tracked carriers suit poor ground and fixed positions.
- Stability aids. Outriggers or a fixed stabiliser blade are common on wheeled handlers and change the safe working envelope significantly.
Select the tool with the front
Closed grab weight, opening dimension and rotator torque all interact with the front's rated capacity at working radius. Choosing the grab after the machine has arrived is how operators end up with a handler that cannot lift a full grab at the radius the yard layout requires.
