Where sustained dredging starts to make sense
At 24 tonnes the machine has enough mass and pontoon volume to stay settled in water that makes lighter classes pitch under load. That stability is what makes continuous dredging productive rather than merely possible — the operator can work a full cycle at reach without waiting for the machine to stop moving.
Where it fits
Sustained desilting programmes, lagoon and settlement pond cleaning, reclamation fill placement, and larger flood-control channels. This is the smallest class most operators would put on a contract measured in months rather than weeks.
What changes at this size
Transport becomes a planned operation rather than a delivery. Pontoons come off, loads travel separately, and crane access is needed at both ends. Budget assembly and demobilisation as programme items, not as overheads absorbed on the day.
Undercarriage cost also becomes material. A machine of this size running submerged for months consumes wear parts at a rate that belongs in the contract cost model rather than in a maintenance contingency.
Deep water caution
Extra mass improves stability but does not extend the depth at which the tracks still find purchase. A heavier machine in deep water over soft silt is just as capable of losing traction as a light one — and considerably harder to recover. Establish bed consistency at working depth before choosing this class for open-water duty.
