Reach bought with capacity
A long-reach front replaces the standard boom and arm with a longer, lighter assembly. The machine gains working radius and gives up lifting capacity. That is the entire design, and everything else follows from it.
The number that matters is not maximum reach. It is lifting capacity at the radius you will actually work at, with the attachment you intend to fit, over the side rather than over the tracks. Capacity falls away sharply towards full extension, and specifications quoted at maximum reach describe a geometric limit rather than a working one.
Why it often beats going amphibious
If there is a bank, road or hardstanding within working radius of the job, long-reach is usually the cheaper answer by a wide margin. It travels as a normal machine, needs no site assembly, and its undercarriage never goes near silt. Canal and riverbank desilting, pond edges, roadside drainage and slope profiling are typically long-reach work rather than amphibious work.
Where it stops working is when there is no stable position within reach at all — the middle of a lagoon, extensive marsh, deep peat. No amount of reach solves that; the machine has to go out there.
What changes on the carrier
- Counterweight. Extended fronts normally need additional counterweight, which raises transport weight and can push the machine into a different transport category.
- Bucket size. Long-reach buckets are deliberately small and light. Fitting a standard bucket to an extended front is the single most common and most dangerous substitution made with this equipment.
- Pin and bush wear. Extended fronts carry higher bending loads, so pins and bushes wear faster and need checking more often.
- Operator technique. Working at reach is less forgiving. Slewing with a loaded bucket at full extension is where things go wrong.
