29 Ton Class

Series Overview

Used where long-reach fronts are fitted and counterweight becomes the limiting factor.

About This Class

The class specified for reach

29 tonnes is typically chosen not because the job needs a bigger bucket but because it needs a longer front. Extended reach on a floating machine is a stability problem before it is a hydraulic one, and counterweight is what solves it. This class exists largely to carry that counterweight.

Where it fits

Wide channels, large lagoons, and any dredging where the machine cannot position close to the material and has to work at radius for most of the cycle. Also used where the working area is fixed by access constraints and the machine has to cover everything from one position.

Reach and capacity, again

The figure that governs is lifting capacity at your actual working radius, over the side, with a full bucket of saturated material. Not maximum reach. Saturated silt runs well above dry soil density, so a bucket sized on dry figures overloads the machine on every cycle at exactly the radius where it has least margin.

Practical consequences

  • Buckets are deliberately small and light. Fitting a standard bucket to an extended front on a floating machine combines two independent stability reductions.
  • Slewing loaded at full extension is the highest-risk moment in the cycle. Operator familiarisation matters more at this size than at any other.
  • Pin and bush wear on the extended front runs ahead of the carrier maintenance schedule and needs its own inspection interval.
