The smallest practical amphibious size
An 8 tonne class amphibious machine is the entry point for this equipment, and its defining advantage has nothing to do with digging: it is the largest amphibious configuration that generally travels on a standard low-loader without being dismantled.
That single fact changes the economics. No crane at either end, no assembly day, no reassembly instructions for the receiving contractor. The machine arrives and works the same morning. On short-duration jobs that advantage frequently outweighs the higher output of a larger machine that spends its first week being put together.
Where it fits
Drainage ditches, farm and estate ponds, retention and attenuation basins, narrow urban watercourses, plantation drains, and any site reached down a lane or through a built-up area where a wide load simply cannot go. It is also the usual choice for contractors who move between many small sites rather than sitting on one job for a season.
Where it runs out
Stability in deeper water is the limit. A light machine has less reserve buoyancy to resist heeling, so it begins to pitch under load at depths a heavier class handles comfortably. Reach is modest, which matters when you cannot get close to the work. And sustained high-volume dredging will simply take longer than the contract allows.
If the job is a season of continuous dredging in open water, this is the wrong end of the range regardless of how convenient the transport is.
Specifying at this size
Attachment weight discipline matters more here than anywhere else in the range, because there is least margin. Buckets should be sized for the machine rather than inherited from whatever is in the yard. Spud poles are worth having if any real digging is planned — a light machine pushes itself backwards very readily.
