Moving fill onto ground that cannot yet carry it
Reclamation is a bootstrapping problem. The area needs filling, but until enough fill is placed the ground will not carry the machines placing it. Every reclamation method is essentially a way around that.
How it is approached
Amphibious machines work from the water side, placing fill ahead of themselves and advancing onto what they have placed. It is slow relative to dry earthmoving but it does not require the ground to be ready first, which is the whole difficulty.
Settlement is the long pole
Newly placed fill over soft substrate settles, sometimes for years. That governs the programme far more than excavation rate does, and it is why reclamation projects are measured in seasons. Equipment planning has to account for a site whose surface is still moving.
Equipment implications
- Long-duration deployment favours larger machines and on-site assembly, since mobilisation cost is amortised over years.
- Undercarriage wear over that duration is a major cost line, not a footnote.
- Ground conditions change continuously as the work progresses — the machine that suits month one may not suit month twenty.
