Dredging

About This Application

What dredging actually demands of a machine

Dredging is repetitive work at reach, usually with a poor surface underfoot and material that weighs far more than operators expect. Saturated silt can run 1.6 to 2.0 tonnes per cubic metre — well above the dry soil figures most bucket sizing is done from. A bucket sized on dry-material assumptions will overload the machine at radius on every single cycle.

Getting to the material

Two approaches, and choosing correctly between them is most of the job. Work from the bank with a long-reach front if there is a bank that will carry the machine within working radius. Go amphibious when there is not. Wide channels sometimes allow working from both banks, which is cheaper than an amphibious machine if access to both sides exists.

Holding position

A floating machine pushes itself backwards when it digs, because there is nothing solid to react against. Spud poles pin the machine to the bed and are effectively mandatory for sustained dredging rather than an optional extra. Without them the operator spends a large share of the shift repositioning.

Where the material goes

This is the part most commonly underplanned. Dredged material arrives saturated and cannot be loaded directly into road trucks. It needs a dewatering area, settlement lagoons or geotextile bags, and that area needs to exist before the machine starts. Projects stall on dewatering capacity far more often than on excavation capacity.

Equipment shortlist

Amphibious machines for open water and soft beds; long-reach fronts where a bank exists; skeleton and lightweight ditching buckets to drain fines rather than lifting water; clamshells for depth beyond arm geometry.
