Ground that will not carry a machine

Saturated peat and organic marsh soils frequently cannot support even a third of the ground pressure a standard tracked excavator applies. The failure is not gradual — the machine breaks through the surface mat and sinks, and recovery from soft ground routinely costs more than the work being done.

The surface mat matters

Marsh and peat often have a fibrous root mat at the surface that is considerably stronger than the material underneath. Machines can operate successfully on that mat while the substrate below could never carry them. Break through it and the situation changes immediately. This is why repeated tracking over the same line is dangerous even where the first pass was fine.

Specification implications

  • Ground bearing pressure is the governing specification, not machine weight or power.
  • Pontoon undercarriages spread load over a far larger footprint than any tracked alternative.
  • Plan travel routes to avoid repeated passes over the same ground.
  • Establish a recovery plan before the machine goes on. Assuming recovery will not be needed is how machines are lost.

Environmental constraints

Wetland work is frequently subject to seasonal restrictions and permitting tied to breeding periods and water levels. These usually determine the working window, and therefore the machine, more than any technical consideration does. Establish them before specifying anything.
