Taking a structure down from ground level
A high-reach demolition front is normally a three-piece assembly that trades lifting capacity for vertical reach, so an operator can dismantle a building from the top down while the machine and the operator stay on the ground.
The alternatives explain why it exists. Hand demolition with scaffolding is slow and puts people on an unstable structure. Explosive demolition is fast but rarely permitted in built-up areas and offers no control once initiated. A high-reach front gives progressive, controllable removal with the operator in a protected cab at ground level.
Specify the tool first, then the front
The governing figure is permitted tool weight at maximum working height, and it is considerably lower than the same front's capacity near the ground. Working backwards from the front's headline reach to a tool that fits is how people end up overloaded. Decide what you need to process — concrete, steel, mixed structure — choose the tool that does it, then specify a front rated for that tool at that height.
Carrier and safety requirements
- Carrier mass. These fronts need a substantially heavier carrier than reach alone suggests, plus additional counterweight, because the overturning moment at height is severe.
- Cab protection. Guarding is standard, not optional. On taller configurations a tilting cab is effectively a requirement — an operator cannot work safely looking near-vertically upward for a full shift.
- Exclusion zones. Falling material does not land where inexperienced planners expect. Zones need setting from the working height, not the structure footprint.
- Interchangeability. Many configurations allow the upper sections to be removed so the machine works as a standard demolition excavator. That materially improves utilisation between high-reach jobs and is worth specifying for.
