Choosing between the four common types
Bucket selection is a trade-off between capacity, penetration and survival, and no single bucket is good at all three. The four types below cover most work.
- General purpose / heavy duty. The default when material is mixed and unpredictable. Reinforced enough to survive occasional rubble or stone without being so heavy that capacity suffers.
- Rock. Narrower, heavily reinforced, stronger tooth system. Trades volume for penetration and survival in blasted rock, hard shale and quarry floors.
- Ripper. Shanks built into the shell so the operator breaks and loads without swapping tools. Neither function is optimal, but it wins where the tool change costs more than the inefficiency.
- Skeleton. Bar or mesh floor that drains fines and retains oversize. Standard for separating rock from soil and for lifting material out of water without the water.
The specification that matters most
Not nominal capacity — filled weight at working radius, against the machine's rated capacity there. Wet material weighs substantially more than the same material dry, and dredged silt is nowhere near the density of the soil it came from. An oversized bucket on a floating machine costs stability, not merely cycle time.
Bar spacing on skeleton buckets
Spacing is the entire specification on a skeleton bucket — it defines the cut point between what is retained and what falls through. Too tight and it blocks solid and behaves like a heavy GP bucket; too wide and it keeps nothing worth keeping.
