Two very different modes of work
Flood work splits into planned infrastructure and emergency response, and they make almost opposite demands on equipment.
Planned work
Levee construction and maintenance, retention basin excavation, channel widening, outfall maintenance. Schedulable, specifiable, and normally done in dry conditions where conventional equipment works fine. Standard earthmoving with long-reach where water is present.
Emergency response
Clearing blockages, breaching or reinforcing embankments, restoring flow — during or immediately after a flood event. Conditions are the worst the site will ever present: saturated ground, standing water, no time for site preparation, and access routes that may themselves be flooded.
This is where amphibious capability earns its cost, because the machine has to reach work across ground that is temporarily impassable to anything else. Response speed matters more than productivity, which argues for smaller machines that transport in one piece and start work on arrival rather than larger ones needing assembly.
Specification consequences
- Transportability and rapid deployment outweigh peak output for response fleets.
- Machines must work reliably in conditions that were not surveyed beforehand.
- Recovery capability needs planning, since response work by definition happens where ground conditions are unknown.
